I used Luke nichols old pack bait recipe from the YouTube channel “catfish and carp”

It’s simple 3 ingredient: panko bread crumbs, strawberry jello mix, and canned corn. The trick is learning to get consistency right.

You’ll catch lots of smaller channel catfish with it too.

Does a carp taste any different than a buffalo?
How big is too big?
Red meat?

A carp tastes much better than a buffalo!

When taken from clean water, I will keep carp that weight between 10 and 20 pounds.

I caught this 15 pound carp last year using my 7wt. fly rod, and that size is perfect for frying or canning.

A side by side comparison, when filleted, it looks just like salmon.

My favorite pack bait -

Old fashion oats, a can of whole corn, a can of cream corn, vanilla extract and boiled bird seed...

A hair rig is used with the pack bait, and the hair is baited with 2 or 3 pieces of boiled feed corn/sugar corn.

Are you talking about gar? If so, probably longnose gar. Those are a bear to get out of nets, as they get the monofilament tangled up in their teeth, then they roll the net up around their bodies for good measure.

Best of luck finding a fishing buddy!
A set of poultry shears that can cut bone gets them out of nets pretty easily.
Snip the gills so they die quickly after.
