A good friend of mine grew up in a neighboring town, however we never met until I went to school at OSU. We became good friends and talked about anything and everything. I don’t know how we got on the subject but one day, I asked him if he believed in ghosts. I could tell by the look on his face that I was about to hear a story. He and his mom lived in an apartment complex on the edge of town. His dad was still in the picture but in the military so they were by themselves most of the time. He was 14 years old and had a property that he could hunt but it was a mile or better from their apartment. He had to walk to get there, mainly because his mom had to work but also because it was in the middle of no where. No highways or county roads near it, and only an old farm road or two that were impassable in bad weather. The quickest way for him to get there was on some railroad tracks that led right past the property. There was an old dilapidated farmhouse that was nearly gone and no other houses or structures anywhere near the property. It was a cold November morning, heavy with freezing fog. He set out well before daybreak and headed down the tracks. He was nearly to the property when he smelled something rancid. He described it to be ”like death.” He just assumed the train had hit a cow or deer that was rotting somewhere nearby, but it was so foggy he couldn’t see past the railroad bed to see anything. He continued walking down the tracks and eventually got away from the smell, but soon came upon the same smell again. Still he could see nothing but he got an eerie feeling and picked up his pace. As he was hurrying to his hunting property, he started to hear footsteps behind him. He continued to walk while he looked over his shoulder…until he ran into something. He turned to see an old man standing on the tracks in front of him. The old man was wearing tattered overalls with no shirt and no shoes. he looked up at the old man”s face that looked like a blank stare, then he smelled the rancid smell again. Keep in mind the temperature was right at freezing and this old man was in the middle of nowhere with minimal clothing. He said that the old man then started to lean down toward him like he was going to say something, then vanished. He said they were no more than 2 feet apart so he didn’t disappear into the fog, rather he was just gone. My buddy said he was so scared that he ran all the way back to their apartment and never went back to hunt that place again. That is the only ghost story or anything of the like that he ever told me. Said he never had any other experiences, but yes, due to that encounter, he does believe in ghosts.
