I’ve had a few intriguing experiences in the forests of the Northeast, but the weirdest one was in the Southern part of the Colorado Rockies. I will admit, the place had a rather ominous name. I went to a Forest Service campground to spend the night, but they wanted $22 a night. They said I could go further up the road to a campsite not yet open for the year and stay for free. The road was quite rough for my van (which I’d been travelling the country in), so I pulled over to a clearing by a stream, not yet to the campgrounds. I parked the car as the last light faded, and stood outside for a cigarette. Then, my right side sliding (electric) door opened on its own. I thought it was a bit strangebut a moment after I walked to the other side of the car, it happened again. I closed it, and as soon as I sat down in the driver’s seat it happened again, this time while I was staring directly at it. I was soon overwhelmed with the feeling that this was NOT the place I wanted to stay at. I drove back to the original place, and with wide eyes and a hurried voice I told them about it, and they let me stay for free. However, in the new place, my phone was flicking on and off constantly. It was next to my head, but in the morning it had been set from silent, past vibrate to sound. It’s a flip phone, and this can only be done by opening it, pressing the buttons for the password, then changing it. I always leave it on silent. When I unlocked my door the next morning (I sleep inside the van) the car alarm went off, which I believe means somebody jarred the door handles during the night. Some people say ghosts work through electromagnetism or the likes. I’ve never thought too much about them, but I didn’t deny their existence. I ended up working on a ranch a few towns away, which, after travelling through several States looking for work, felt rather close. I talked to a priest, we agreed it was a bad spirit (I believe in spirits, no doubt, I just don’t know how ghosts of people, even kind ones, fits into my Christian faith), and prayed. Nothing significant since. I apologize for the length of this, and you could easily say that electronic devices are prone to malfunctions, but I don’t believe these all happened at the same time because of “coincidence.” If it was something electromagnetic with the area, explain the phone (and not my iPod) and only one door opening. Not thrilling, but real enough for me.
