did glock start with a "glock 1, gen 1" ? all those different numbers and gen updates....

Really the P80 was the first, but they were not imported to the US by Glock. There was also a P82.

Here are a couple of pictures recently posted in a collector forum.

I think there may be a couple of prototypes that were approved and I know of a couple that came in by 3rd party exporter/importers.

From what I’ve came to understand, Glock didn’t use the Gen terminology (at least not publicly) until the Gen 4 was released. Even then they did not refer to the previous generation numbers until we saw the Gen 5 get released.
Gen 4 and 5s are marked as such.

The 1st generation run was pretty short 84-late 88, although we didn’t see them imported until Late Jan 1986.
There were only 4 models in the Gen 1s. 17, 18, 19, and 17L. Only very few non-17 model exist and are very sought after. And the 18 is pretty much non-obtainable in the Civilian world.

Even the Gen 1 G17 is not common. I’ve chased after a few that turned out to be 2nd generation G17s.

This is my 1st Generation G17 in the original box with original Magazines and brush. I have since obtained the correct rear sight and loader. I still need to obtain the correct owners manual.
This is a very early one of the Gen 1 run imported in Feb 1986, although the date stamps indicate April 1985.
