Opening day of the special youth season this year my son, Huckleberry 75, and I took his son Maddox on his first hunt. Maddox, age 7, has been wanting to go with us for a year so it was time. We climbed into the shooting house before daylight and settled in. Shortly after legal shooting time we heard a shot close by. The shot came from another shooting house that a guest and his son were in. Turned out the guest’s son harvested an 8 point that was sparing with a 7 pointer. Soon afterwards we see a nice buck trailing a doe and yearling on the other side of our neighbors fence. Huckleberry had a good look at him and felt he was around 130”. What a great first deer for Maddox that would be. None of the deer hopped over the fence but went on. An hour later the doe and yearling returned. The doe hopped the fence and walked into the food plot and stopped at 35 yards. Maddox swiveled in his chair and pulled the trigger. Maddox was one happy camper.
