From Rory Miller

"Too many people train like they are collecting tools. Mechanics don’t study tools, they study cars and what can go wrong with them. Doctors don’t take classes on Scalpel 101, they study diagnostics and anatomy. If you want to defend yourself, learn about violence." – Rory Miller

But at some level mechanics do "study" tools. If you think they don't just hand a torque wrench to someone who has never even used a Crescent wrench and ask them to torque the heads down on a V-8.
Doctors do study scalpels, how to use them and which one to use in what situation.
I don't discount the point about knowing about violence, but it is also important to know about the tools that enable the defence against violence.

I think that, in all three cases (surgeon, mechanic, armed individual,) the key is to study both the tools of the trade and where they will be used. A surgeon who knows his tools but has no clue about the body he's cutting on is as worthless as one who knows the body intimately but doesn't know a scalpel from a crossbuck saw. A mechanic who knows torque wrenches, impact drivers and feeler gauges but doesn't know a carburetor from a differential is no better than one who knows every bolt and nut of a car but doesn't know which tool works on which part. Likewise, a person who wants to protect himself but only knows his weapons and doesn't know how to detect potential threats and how to mitigate them is as ill prepared as one who knows all about the human psyche but can't even load a handgun of any sort. The key is to be well rounded.

Eye surgeons, and some plastic surgeons, prefer obsidian scalpels to steel. Each one is hand made.
