I have a couple factory made one and I think they have small air holes at the upper part of the can

I may need to poke some holes and see what happens.

I've got a homemade weed burner built probably 50 years ago. 1/2" gal pipe squeezed down with a cone welded around it. no regulator just rubber hose clamped to the gal pipe from the propane bottle.
