Life and responsibilities have got in the way of my hunting plans more once in my life time. I have passed on more than one hunt because bills had to be paid or the kids needed shoes. My all time favorite deer hunting Rifle a Ruger No. 1 in 6mm Remington got sold to buy groceries while in college about two weeks before student loan checks came in. This is the same gun used to take a Blacktail deer just big enough to qualify for the record book several months earlier. I was lucky in one sense in that I had a career that allowed me to transfer around the country, so I went hunting locally where I worked. Or when I could I transferred to where there was hunting. Major criteria for the transfer to Montana in 97 was hunting. I did a lot of hunting up there. As side note to Montana, I met a colleague up there who was from Oklahoma. 20 years later I when I was widower, I met and married that colleagues widowed Okie Mother. The Hawaii hunt was while I was in the Marines and The Kaneohe Bay Rod and Gun Club flew us to Puuhakaloa Training area on the Big Island on Frogs to hunt sheep. The first Africa hunt for 7 animals was cheaper than an Alaska hunt for Moose. Well maybe not including shipping trophies and taxidermy, but that came later. Worked a lot of overtime for that trip, took the wife for a 10 day hunt. My son and his wife went with us, as well as my Mother in Law. The biggest thrill of that hunt, greatest excitement was my 73 year old Mother in law, who had never been hunting, getting Zebra. That was 20 years ago and I am 73 now and don't see what the big deal is. I was TDY to Macedonia and one of the Macedonian Officials I was working with said he would arrange a hunt for me. Our State Department Rep told me that they were creating a special hunt just for me. Big time conflict of interest. Nipped that in the bud real quick. Drat. What I am saying, is hang in there, take it one hunt at a time. Write down a stories about each hunt, take pictures, do taxidermy when and if you can. When you get to be my age you will have some good stories and good memories as well as a lot good friends.
