If you put the primer on the concrete floor and smack it with a hammer do not have your bare knees on the floor.
It will crater the concrete and send pieces of it out from under the hammer head.

I know that was suggested.
:)
And it is pretty loud.

Small rifle primers have a harder cup and I found many pistols do not strike the primer cup hard enough to set them off.
That would explain your occasional fail to fire compared to the small pistol primer.

When I used rifle primers in my homemade 45acp bird shot loads some would not go off and after 3-4 retries they would sometimes go off.
The dent was very small in the rifle primer compared to the pistol primer.

unopened cans of powder with no unusual characteristics are probably ok.

Unsealed cans, are always questionable.
Do you trust that they have the labeled powder in them.
Its your life and limb your gambling.
I would burn any opened powder before risking my hands, eyes, and guns to save a couple of bucks.
One ER visit will cost more than the powder is worth.

I also see that the primers are pistol primers.
The powders used with them tend to be fast burning flake powders.
Not a lot of room for error with that stuff.
