Yea I eat some odd things and I do love some free or cheap stuff.

It may be stupid for me to collect a lot of free things but I do use them and usually one of my buddies will need something and I will have it
or another friend may have it.

Here is a picture of a counter top and back splash I am almost finished with.
I just need to caulk the edge between tile and counter top.

@Forgalspop gave me some Formica that had a date on the back 1994 I think it was.

Blue suede was the color.
I got free tile from craigslist that was almost the same color.

I do not see anything wrong with what you do!! Saves money and space in the landfills like stated earlier!!
My house was built in 48 , attic insulation is recycled from remodels I have done . Front door was saved from a lady who thought a metal front door was "tacky". Almost all the shop out back is recycled except the metal roof . Right now I am collecting oak shipping material from the job I am on cause the better half wants a "country " kitchen table!!
And if half the folks giving you crap knew your work schedule they would be asking for lessons in how to go about doing what you have done LOL.
