As long as we keep the current politicians and political ideology in power this will continue. There are two solutions within the current political mainstream:

1) Unleash Socialism - Gov't can help you financially to make ends meet, you don't have to work harder or more
2) Unleash Capitalism - a twist though, better trade relations with foreign nations, less trade restrictions (tariffs), increase production of oil, all will be okay.

I really think we need a third option, Unleash Capitalism, promote US production of oil and other natural resources, promote US industry, promote US production of high tech products (Hardware and means of manufacturing products). The libertarian (Corrected with a special thanks to @ConstitutionCowboy) ideology of let the market sort it out is not good because of the baggage it caries and it doesn't matter were your labor and goods come from as long as it is cheap.

"Let the market sort it out" is not Leftist. The lack of tariffs has undermined the market's ability to sort things out with the unchecked foreign competition, forcing local manufacturing to shut down, fade away, and has placed people out of work and on to welfare and to life on the streets. Government has gone so far into debt trying to maintain our lifestyle that it is despotic, desperate, and bordering on having to engage in tyranny to survive.

Collecting tariffs on foreign goods will place local goods in equal or better demand, will create job opportunities, and the tariffs on foreign goods along with the regular sales taxes on local and imported goods, will make it so that government won't have to borrow money to support what the Constitution requires of it, won't create inflation due to the governmental borrowing, and won't support the forced labor in all those communist slave countries that want to - and are succeeding to - destroy us.

The tariffs were a joke. Companies continued to import and paid the tariffs and passed the costs onto the consumers. Which yes did put local products in a better position.

But ultimately. What happened to the tariff money?

The companies/ corporations receive a good portion of paid tariff money back at the end of the year.

So the consumer footed the bill when paying inflated prices. The US government got their cut, and the corporations buying goods oversees made record profits those years because of it in the form of rebates from the federal government.

I don’t see where any big manufacturing facilities were brought back on line domestically because of the tariffs. The raw materials still come from overseas, no massive auto manufacturing lines brought back into our boarders. Heavy equipment and machinery still manufactured overseas. The only thing the tariffs accomplished as making rich people richer and making middle class people poorer.

For the first 120 years or so of the US our primary source of "tax dollars" was tariffs. That was permanently changed in 1913.

They were a primary source of income for the government. Until the federal income taxes became the primary source of income. But they were never really a means to promote domestic manufacturing as they were lobbied to the public.

Looks like inflation is getting worse & the Fed can’t control it without drastically raising rates , which will cause a recession. Rock & a hard place. We are screwed & it’s the fault of Congress.
It could be done to a degree without the FED, to a degree. Rates in relation to home prices are high. A steady stream of dinosaur juice and flatulence (Oil and Gas) sourced in abundance by more drilling and driving the price down would be a big help. Getting goods from the coasts faster and without obstruction would help greatly too. If our government would get out of the way, stop giving away money prices would drop. When we had the gold standard there were actually deflationary periods. Central banks are in part were and are part of the the cause, not an entire solution.
