Yes, in short, 1X12 will have trouble with 62 grain stuff, and depending on age of you A1 it could be a 1X14 the very early commercial rifles had that twist. But more to the point I have had 1X12 barrels keyhole with M855/SS109 grab some 55s and you will be happy

It's a slick-sided upper so it's technically not even an A1 so I'm guessing it's a pretty early upper.

The rifling might look ok but that doesn't mean it is. SS109/M855 requires a 1-7...that's why the A2 is a 1-7. A 1-12 should be using M193 or equivalent.

Add: a shot out barrel or a 1-14 will tumble 55s too.

Judging by the overall appearance of the upper and BCG it hasn't been shot much. And I've owned it for at least 25 years...just never put it on anything. I suppose it could be shot out but I don't think that's the case. I'm gonna snag a box of 55gr stuff and see what happens.

That's a carbine gas on a rifle barrel so it might be an early commercial offering. The slipring is definitely period to the upper. You can slug the barrel to see if it's a 1-12 or a 1-14.
