It's an interesting illumination of how much commerce depends on the vagaries of nature:

"It's enormously significant," Sean Molloy of Achill's tourism office told the Irish Times newspaper, recalling how the popular beach once sustained four hotels and a number of guesthouses on the west coast of the island of 2,600 people.

Back in the 80s lake michigan was way up. There were houses along lakeshore drive literally being washed out into the lake. I saw pics of the beach when these houses were built back in the 20's. There was like 200 yards of beach before the water!
Now just 30 years later, there is about 20 to 30 yrds.
The lake levels seem to move in a 100 year cycle
