Just got a beat up old broken SxS 12 gauge. Need help dating it and identifying it. Gonna try and get her cleaned up for more pictures but I’ll post the one I got of the engraving on it. Buttstock is broken something awful.

can’t beat a free project gun though

edit: just found the model. Model 335

I have a J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company, Chicopee Falls, MASS. USA, Patented March 19, 1907, 12 guage double barrel. I cannot find a serial number anywhere. Two triggers. No hammers. On the bottom, it says either Model 885 or 335 - I think it's 335. Has a thumb safety and nice checkered buttstock and forend.

Under this "tool Company" name, it's my understanding that the company started in 1886, and changed its name in 1916. Therefore, was it made between the patent date of 1907 and the name change in 1916?

The 2007 Standard Catalog of Firearms lists it as: Poor - 200 dollars, up to Excellent - 450 dollars.

If it were mine with the stock broken, I'd forget about any restoration to original condition, focusing on getting it into shooting condition with whatever stock I could find. It's fun doing that.
This place might have an actual reproduction stock. I've used them in the past.

Just from what little research I have done tonight I think I determined mine was made between 1912-1916. I could be wrong. Still can’t find a serial number so I’m just going off of the way the name is written on the receiver.

stock isn’t the only thing screwed up. Tried seeing if I could get the triggers to do anything and internally it must be messed up.

Might just need cleaned. Some of those old guns were never taken apart for a good lube and cleaning.

From this site
This is my research so far. It all started out when I was trying to find out what year my J. Steven Arms Co., Double Barrel, S x S, Model 335 Shotgun was made. I pretty quickly learned that there are no records available as they were reportedly destroyed in a fire. I decided to start collecting Serial Numbers to try to determine what year, or approx what year, my gun was made. Below is my list so far. I collected numbers that I felt were from reliable and accurate sources from around the internet. Not included were numbers that were too unclear and also numbers that had a Letter in front of it. I found a handfull of those and they still don't make any sense to me. Feel free to add any info and more reliable numbers to the list.

BTW, my number is 847XX. By my research it appears, so far anyway, that my gun was made in the mid 20's.

I also kept the last 2 numbers off the originals as I feel it serves no purpose in the research.

The more numbers we can add will help us all who are trying to determine the year of their gun, or as accurate as we can anyway.
