James Earl (Jimmie) Howard Medal of Honor (HILL 488 June 13, 1966)

Jimmie E. Howard Next to the word "Marine" in the dictionary, there should be a notation... "See Jimmie Howard". Perhaps no other words in the English language better describe what it means to be a member of the Corps than the name of the man who led the most decorated unit in American military history in the most improbable battle of modern warfare.

Heckuva story, RIP Jimmie Howard. In 1966 I was eight years old, so unaware of all U.S. military involvement. Started reading, learning about it in the late 1970s’. Can’t imagine what the fight on that hill was like. Even with good defensive positions, which it didn’t seem like the Marines had, how did any of them survive. Eight rounds of ammo left, by the time their relief arrived? How fast could a rifleman squirt away twenty round mags of 5.56MM on full auto? The Marines’ fire discipline must have been outstanding. Awe inspiring. Thanks for the post Snapshot.

Here, but occasionally There.
I am just guessing that this ok shooters forum, has few if any Veterans as members.

I'm just wondering what thought process brought you to this comment. And, as Hangfire mentioned, there are a good number of veterans here. Perhaps you should read more and note people's avatars to get better "clued in?"

This is a small part from the December 1980 Soldier of Fortune Article Howards Hill "Little Big Horn with Survivors. (This artical is reprinted with permission of the United States Marine Corps.)

This will give readers as to just how tough a fight Sgt. Howard and his men faced that day.
