Part of the Twister movie was filmed near our place and the fields around it. Crews were stacked up on our driveway occasionally. Back in that day our scanner picked up everything including cell phone calls. We caught a lot of the chatter and sometimes some things that were "really interesting". They brought a lot of money into the community. Edit: As an example, for high wind effects, they are normally produced by wind turbines that hollywood uses, but they were all tied up in other productions, so they hired a guy in town with an airboat at $100 per hour to sit and wait for the 20 minute segment they needed wind. He waited many days sitting around doing nothing but drawing big money until the big units showed up. Guy North of us with a wheat field coming up had the film crew wanting green wheat waving in the wind with heads on it. The wheat was turning color as it was getting close to harvest. They hired a crop duster to spray the field with a dye to make it green again. The local junk shops got a major lift in sales with the crews looking for stuff to hang in trees and distribute on the ground for visual effects. People with nice homes in town, moved out while renting to the big guns like actors, producers, directors and so on. When they moved back in, they found the homes had really been upgraded because the hollywood folks like their luxury and high end living. They left all the improvements, just walking away. We heard later that they would have paid double or more for the accommodations as the rent was OK pricing vs Califorinka pricing. Lesson learned, and advice for those that live in Pawhuska and surrounding areas.
