We have an estimated population of 475k deer We kill roughly 100k a year, so under 25%. So at the end of the year we have 375k deer and say in a pefect world 50:50 buck:doe that leaves 185k doe left to replenish the herd. Now say only 50% of them have babies, that's 94k. But say 50% have twins so add another 46k babies. So at the end of the year we killed 100k deer and repopulated with 140k. Our population grew right? Now take a 25% mortality rate in fawns and that still puts us at close to even. But we all know our ratio isn't 50:50 and we have more doe, so those numbers can probably a little or possibly a lot higher. But we also arnt the only ones doing the killing, cars, predators, poaching efc... But our population has held strong or grown every year for a long time. To answer the ? No I don't think we over harvest as far as the state as a whole. The regional deal I can agree with for sure, I'd bet in some places we probably over harvest some.
