It's all about bullet technology and selling ammo/components.
Marketing those calibers equals sales. When one reaches its pinnacle, they move on to the next super round that has a tiny bit more BC and another 50 fps.
At a mile, that BC may make a difference.
For the average shooter it doesn't mean squat when you're shooting at 300 yards which most shooter think is long range.
You’re exactly right and the soon to be new kid on the block will be the 7mm PRC. Hornady and their quest to market their ELD line of bullets have the gun manufacturers chambering rifles for their PRC cartridges. Sad part is, you can find the rifles but you can’t feed them. The 300, 7mm, 6.5mm, 6mm, and .25 PRC’s were developed for the longer bullets and a faster twist rate and, coincidentally, so was the 6.8 Western. Goodness, we’ve got the whole gambit covered now don’t we?

You guys are just playing with toys. Get yourself a real long range round like the .17 incenerator and report back to us. 🤣
