not going to argue with you there but was talking about kids

You're probably right. We'll see once he gets to shoot both guns. I won't try to sway him one way or the other. He's been shooting with me a few times before. It's just important to me that he enjoys it, is safe, and gets started off right.

I love my tube fed Marlins, but I think most 15 year olds would choose the magazine fed rifle if that was the only discernable difference.

"Semi-auto is not in the running for his first gun. He gets a bolt."

I agree with this,,,
I will not pay for ammo to "hose" a target.

I take a fair amount of young folk and kids shooting,,,
I will start them out with an accurate bolt-action.

The don't get to shoot the semi-auto rifles,,,
Until they display a desire to learn to shoot accurately.

If they are bored with the bolt-action rifle,,,
I'm assuming they aren't really wanting to learn how to shoot.

Way too many people get on me for this attitude,,,
They say, "C'mon Aarond, let 'em have some fun."

I reply, "Simply turning ammo into noise isn't fun, it's just plain wasteful."

Hitting what you aim at is what should be fun,,,
At least that's my definition for it.

Agreed. We'll be shooting targets. He is more into learning to be accurate than spraying bullets...at least the few times I've taken him shooting so far. I have some "Tack Driver" game targets we'll shoot as well as those little 1" red stick-on dots and he'll get to see which rifle he likes best. He DOES say he likes a bolt action gun better than shooting my SW 15-22, so that's a step in the right direction anyway. Now we just need to see if he likes the tube fed Marlin or the box mag fed Savage next. I might have a Junior Sniper in the pipeline! The fun part for me is of course going to be dressing whichever one he likes in a nice stock and outfitting it with a decent scope for his upcoming birthday present. I'll keep the other one for me; I really have no preference. I also like shooting a bolt action . 22 in a big way. But as I age, those sticky dots might need to get bigger so I can at least have a chance at seeing them. I'm slowly becoming a minute-of-trash-can-lid shootist I'm afraid. Damn old eyes![emoji41]

Update: He likes the Marlin best; no real reason; he just says he likes the Marlin a little better. So I guess he will be getting a Marlin XT-22tr for his birthday. I'll hold onto the Savage and that will be my plinking-bolt .22 rifle. For those interested in one of these, both are incredibly accurate little guns; pick the one you like best, the tube-fed Marlin XT 22tr, (they also make a regular XT 22 box mag) or the Savage MK II, box mag bolt gun. I know, I know, a CZ 455 is a great rifle, but I doubt I would be any better with it than either this Marlin or the Savage I already have. I already got a Boyd's Pro-varmint Stock for the Marlin, in Royal Jacaranda, and a Montana Sling.

I bought my first rifle at 11 or 12. It was a mag-fed Mossberg 142. For the price I paid, it was a great little gun. But, I detested the magazine. My uncles all had Remington 241's and 121's, which were tube-fed (under barrel or through-stock) and I salivated for any one of them.

Based on that, I'd say Marlin.

That's weird! When I posted this, your above post showed up, 4 hours after you posted. BTW, I'd bet that stock influenced him just a little.

That is weird. I had the synthetic stock on the Marlin when he shot the two guns. He hasn't seen the Boyd's stock yet and won't until it's birthday party time.
