Howdy. I'm trying to fix a 7mm mauser k98(?) that's not extracting and I think it's a worn extractor claw. I was wondering if anyone would be down to meetup and swap bolts or extractors with me to troubleshoot before I order a replacement extractor. I'd be happy to come to you at your convenience; you'd be doing me a favor.

My buddies and I are trying to troubleshoot it, but we're kind of going back and forth on it being a worn claw, so I was hoping to find someone with a working mauser near by. Thank you!

Where are you located? Every K98 I've ever seen has been 8mm, and every K98 bolt I have is for 8x57 mm. Are you 100 percent sure the problem isn't ammunition related?

If the bolt has two digits stamped on it that are the same as the last two digits of the rifle serial chances are excellent headspace is okay. If they aren't, headspace should be checked before firing, if it hasn't already been. The original extractor might be chipped out, likely due to closing the bolt on loose rounds not being fed from the magazine.

Does unfired brass extract? I had a k98 that would not extract once. Turns out that the ammo was too hot.

Without looking at it, military Mausers have force fed extractors. Meaning you must load from the magazine.
Careful grinding of the extractor claw by someone that knows what they are doing, results in being ab;e to drop shells into the chamber and close bolt and extract upon opening. If it's not broken or altered, if it's just releasing the casing prior to ejecting, the extractor can usually be adjusted.

Where would the digits be stamped on the bolt?

I'm in Mustang. A casting was done and it's supposed to be 7mm. 8mm won't fit. I've been having trouble identifying where the rifle is from. We're thinking it's a Czech contract rifle for a south American country but haven't narrowed it down further. I might see if I can get a go/nogo gage before a replacement extractor.

Thanks!
