My son worked full-time all of 2014. Skateboarded all over Tulsa. Spent five years in the USMC, skateboarded everywhere he was stationed. Now he works at a foundry pouring melted brass, copper, stainless - he still skateboards.
How would you define a real job? I'm sure he'd feel bad for not living up to your standards.
When we were in Oregon for 27 months, we saw LOTS of young adults using skateboards. No idea as to whether they were employed or not, but we just assumed that if employed, they didn't earn enough to buy a car, or want the hassle of licensing, insuring, etc.
