Um, the internet, except for those using satellite internet, does not go through satellites. Period. The response time would be horrendous (ask anyone who has ever tried to game on satellite internet). The internet actually runs through fiber optic backbones that criss cross the US and goes underwater to different countries. Satellite internet goes from the customer to the satellite, then the company's headend where it connects to a backbone. And no, the government does not have enough computing power to monitor every single packet that is sent in the US. Sorry, but not possible. Now if they identify someone of interest they can packet sniff via the ISP copying and rerouting packets originating from their modem, that is all too plausible. To illustrate my point lets look at two theoretical ways the gov could do this. One: inspect every packet as its sent. This would slow traffic way down. A good ping time is about 50 ms. If the gov was inspecting the packets that would probably jump up to 300 ms or more (remember, it is inspecting every single packet in the US). There would not be enough Crays in the world to monitor that much traffic on the fly without bogging it down. Two: all packets are copied and sent to the gov. Yeah, they would need to take the entire state of Montana and turn it into a server farm just to house that data for a single day. Think of every social media post, every good search, every porn video watched, etc etc. Either way its just not possible. That is some severe tin hat conspiracy with 0% validity.
