Filled up on the way to church this morning. $5.76/gallon for 91 octane. Drove by one station advertising diesel at $5.99/gallon. It will be a glorious day when we see CA in the rear view mirror…..
Figured I'd fill up the Cummins before it got much higher just now. Local station way off the freeway was $6.29 a gallon. WAY out of hand...

I must have been in the same category as you. I got my first car in 1962, and it was a 1954 Ford "plain-jane" with a six cylinder and column shift. I was happy to have that vehicle because for two years prior, I rode to the fields to run a tractor on a motor scooter. That Ford cost me $150 and then we had to replace second gear in the transmission.

I'm amused to read of others talking about their various automobiles. One even mentioned having either 3 or 4 vehicles. The wife and I have a sum total of two, one of which is pretty much relegated to the job of pulling a big fifth wheel RV. The other is sizable, but still economical enough for us, and it can really haul cargo or luggage for 3 or 4 people on a fairly long trip.
Wow! An 8 year old car in high school.
my first car was 20 years old. I'll go be poor somewhere else.

The first car I ever bought is still the newest. Every one I bought after that I set limits on amount. That number continued on a down trend to the point that I can’t buy anything! I’ll drop a motor in my truck before i spend 50k on a 3 year old truck with 50k on it.

Wow! Similar stories. I rode a well used Honda Ace 90 to work on Osage county ranches until getting my first car at 16. 55 Ford custom line with a 272 C.I. Y block engine. Single barrel carb that cost $200 to buy in 67.
it developed into a salvage yard special as the 312 Y block parts bolted right up to the 272 block. Dual point distributors, bigger ports in the intake manifold, and so on. With a 312 police interceptor intake, 3/4 cam and 4 bbl carb it was quite the street racer in that day. My traffic record reflected that too.

(being lazy and don't want to go back to quote) My first high school, Westmoore, was a mix of wannabe rich (very high middle class), a few rich, and poor. I was in the poor class. The parking lot was mostly higher end cars as most of the poor kids rode the bus. My mom bought a 81 Plymouth Horizon for $500 when she killed her 84 Escort diesel wagon. Then she got a good deal on a Buick Skylark and gave the Horizon to me. It was a bare bones plain jane econobox. No a/c, no power anything, 1.7 L 4 banger. But hey, it beat the bus. I would get to school early to get a good spot. Well, to those upper ups on the money ladder kids that wasn't acceptable. For a week solid someone would hock a loogy on my car. I took it to the 10th grade principal and was told there is nothing they can do. I finally just parked in a different area and at the end of the school year I transferred to Moore High.

To this day I still love and miss that little car. Had a lot of fun times in it. Unfortunately I had two accidents in a 3 week span in my senior year, the second was a head on collision that completely killed it.

I know there has to be more car people on this forum than this. Hearing all these sob stories makes me think you should sell some of your 70 guns and buy a better truck.

My household has 2 drivers, 6 personal cars and a company car.

Things are a lot different now for us and I’m sure others. It’s fun looking back to see where we were back into the day and where we are now after making some great life decisions.
Still wish I had that 62 Ford pickup that was unibody I dragged from a creek bank. Sanded on those 8 or so coats of paint and bondo for weeks to expose the real steel and repainted it with a metal flake silver used by Lincoln’s at the time. Beautiful truck when finished.
We were at the Barrette Jackson auction in Scottsdale Az a couple weeks ago. A 62 just like mine went for 6 figures.

I was spoiled and didn't realize it. Parents bought my first car off the showroom floor. Then my next two trucks, although they were used. Since getting out on my own, my yard has generally looked like a used car lot for four wheel drives. I've trimmed my collection down. Currently have the wife's new car and I have 6 vehicles of my own, with three of them in project status. Between guns, vehicles and my general other wants, I really need to get two more jobs to afford it all.

I never had a minimum wage job but started working when I was less than 10yo. We were lower middle class so we didnt go to bed hungry but there werent a lot of extras unless something special came up. My grandpa owned the auction in Jones, so I grew up there and would hustle peoples stuff they bought to their cars, carry tickets from the clerk to the office, bring drinks to the clerk and auctioneer, etc. After a while I started noticing what stuff could sell for there and I would have my mom stop by garage sales or I would spend my own money to buy bulk stuff that was on a big sale to flip at the auction.

In HS, I ran the concession at the auction and hauled cattle through college. We grew up being taught that money was everywhere, you just had to figure out how to get it.

My first car was an 86 F150 that my uncle had driven in college. I had to get it running to have something to drive. I was always jealous that my brother got the CJ7 my grandpa and I used to hunt out of because he never had to pick up a wrench. In hindsight, I wouldnt have changed a thing.
