So a short while back I was asking about groomsmen gifts for my wedding, and while I initially was considering Case, I went with Moore Maker knives. Said I would do a review, so here it is.

I ended up buying three styles of knives, their 3-3/4” lockback, their 7-1/2” gut hook, and their 4-1/8” trapper. All in white bone. The trappers for my groomsmen and myself, the lockback for my father in law, and the gut hook and one trapper for myself. Initial impression is that they’re really pretty knives. I really like the “Moore Maker Matador Texas” stamped into the ends, gives it a classic feel. I also like carbon steel blades, which all of these knives supposedly come with. With a little work (I’m terrible at sharpening knives) I was able to get all of these knives really sharp.

Now, after looking at these knives I did find I had some complaints. One or two of the trappers had uneven sharpening bevels, when comparing each side. I also found that the said bevel was uneven front to back. Hopefully you can pick that up in these pictures.

Also, one of the knives was pretty gritty to open. It ended up being the one I kept, and with some cleaning and a lot of working a polishing compound into the mechanism, it has smoothed out some. I figure it will continue to smooth out with use.

I found there to be some flaws in the bone, whether it be in a gap on the handle or with the bone being slightly proud of the metal end caps(someone tell me what these are, I have forgotten the name.). I figure the proud edges will wear down with time, so that shouldn’t be a big deal. I am concerned with the gaps though.

I found that a few of the medallions also stood proud of the handles, which I’m not a fan of, but I figure it will even up with time.

I didn’t find anything wrong with my father in laws lockback, and honestly, it’s a gorgeous knife. Kinda wish I got one of them for myself too! He absolutely loves it. Classy knife. I didn’t take any pictures of it, so here’s one off their website.

Finally, the gut hook. I really like this knife, it feels nimble and precise, like a scalpel. The slight forward angle of the blade in my hand should be really nice for game, I really hate my havalon knife, so hopefully this will work out nicely. The medallion stands a little proud, but other wise I have no complaints. The sheath is decent, definitely a step up from the typically throw in sheath you find with fixed blades.

In the end, I’m happy with the purchase. The cosmetic issues could probably be fixed with their one year warranty, but I don’t know if I wanna send anything in just yet. I’ll give it a few months and see what happens. Shipping was fast and painless, I think it took 4 days to get to my door, with free shipping with a minimum order and they do offer a military discount if you email them and ask.
