I might of missed it but what is the distance to the target in those photos?

There is a pretty good thread on the trials and tribulations of the Valkyrie on The Firing Line forum.

Are those groups measured with the center to center method or inside to inside? Either way is fine as long as you continue using the same method to compare loads. I like to use the center to center method with it being the standard.

Center to center method. And it’s probably assumed, but those are 100 yd groups.

Looking at the group size with .224 holes it looks like you measured inside to inside and subtracted .224 when you should have added .224 to your measurement. I may be wrong though.

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk but if it was me I would look at adjusting charge weights again. The groups are not consistent on a clock scale and I don't know if adjusting seating depth will get you where you want to be. Often we get caught up in trying to achieve maximum velocity when we should be backing it off a little to get the groupings we desire. Although I could be completely wrong.

Good luck with it, to me this is the fun part of hand loading.

You’re right...you are wrong.

But you had me questioning things so I just pulled out the target and remeasured the Sierra HPBT target using your method and it came out to .483” grouping. Considering the difference in your method and my measuring center to center resulting in a difference of hundredths, I’d say that is negligible.

I actually started at lower charge weights. The groups didn’t start tightening up until I got around 24.0 gr, then I tested in 0.2 gr increments. The Sierras tightened up at a faster rate.

24.0 gr = 1.517”
24.2 gr = 1.241”
24.4 gr = 0.960”
24.6 gr = 0.516”

So I’m not sure changing the charge weights by 0.1 gr upor down will change things much, but I might give it a try. Like you said, that’s part of the fun in handloading.
