Another vote for the Ruger SR 1911 here. Not expensive, Series 70 1911 A1 design, (simpler) and great customer service out of Ruger if ever needed. Plus, made in America.

You can buy a NIB Colt XE series for around $850. If your not in a hurry, you can pick up a used Colt 1911 for under $700

I bought a new Rock Island commander about 4 years a go and it has been 100% reliable and quite accurate and all the controls have a great "feel". The trigger was maybe 4-5 pounds and I only paid about $350 for it off the net. I like the GI look but not the sights and wanted a full size gun so I sold it and bought a Springfield Mil Spec .45 and love it and paid about $475 but its not a bit better than the Rock and has a stiffer slide release.

IMO, the Ruger SR1911 has all of the features of the high end guns and it's reasonably priced. It will cost a little more than the Rock, Remington or ATI's.
