A captain friend of mine related this story about a 40 year old major that went to airborne school. His whole family and his friends told him he was going to "break his ass". He made it all the way through except for the last daytime jump. He jumped and had a streamer. He cut away and the reserve fell down toward his legs and he forgot to keep his knees and feet together. The chute went through his legs and started filling up. He started grabbing the chute and pulling it from between his legs throwing it up and almost blowing into it like a cartoon character to get it to fill with air. He finally had a Mae West and hit hard but did his PLF perfectly. He arrived home and rang the doorbell. When his 5 year old daughter opened the door she took one look at him on crutches, turned around and yelled, " Hey mom, you were right, he broke his ass!"

I know exactly what you mean. A fishtape is the only thing I know of that could hang up on a cloud. My O2 hose is almost as bad.
Being an old wiring technician instead of a reserve chute, I would want a fishtape, because I know it will hang up on something on my way down.
My luck it would be the plane.
I would suggest that a standard set of automotive jumper cables can get hooked or hung up on anything at any time for absolutely no reason. After reading this it occurred to me they would make a great reserve chute also. Had a set snag up on a flat concrete driveway.

If I was going to design a grappling hook it would look like a set of jumper cables.

We got to watch his 5th jump today, what a range of emotions. I was in awe when guys started pouring out of the doors. A guy with a nice camera emailed me some great shots including one of my son running in with his re packed chutes.

Did basic at Ft Cambell Ky, home of the 101st while they were deployed. We did everything but the actual jump in training.
Don't know if I could jump out of an aircraft that was still flying intact.
I'm sure some goon of a jump master would put a boot in my arse and it would be all over but the scream.
Congrats to the OP's son getting his jumps in safely!

Years ago, I was told there ain't nuthin to civilian jump school. You learn how to land first. Then you learn how to jump. Jumping is the easiest part just walk out onto the wing and let go. Count to ten, yell "Geronimo" and then pull the ripcord.

My luck I'd forget the name of that damn Indian.
