The principal is a moron on every possible level, from being a total humbug about Christmas to an egregious lack of knowledge on religious symbolism. The candy cane is a bit of religious symbolism, just not the simple shape as a "J" to stand for Jesus. It represents a shepherd's crook that allows him to tend his flock. Shepherds attended the birth of Jesus in the manger and He was called the Good Shepherd because He tends the Church as a flock. I greatly doubt the principal is capable of reciting a bit of this symbolism.
