Well it looks like someone may have finally come out with a reliable AR-15 platform chambered in 7.62 x 39 that actually supports a somewhat average capacity magazine.

I just might get on this AR -15 bandwagon...

Bushmasters new AR - 15 supports their custom enginered 26 round magazine.

From their site

This gas operated semi-automatic packs a bigger punch than our 5.56mm/.223models – the 7.62x39mm (known by some as the AK round) delivers the added power and similar performance of a .30-30 cal.; over 2300 FPS velocity with 122 gr. bullets. Due to the "fatter" case diameter, magazine capacity is reduced to 26 Rounds, and 7.62.x39 specific springs and followers are used in the AK-curved steel magazine. The bolt is also different - due again to case diameter (take care not to interchange a 5.56mm/.223 bolt with a 7.62x39mm bolt).

That interesting, but if I'm going to go a bigger cal than the .223, It will be one of the other uppers that offer superior firepower than the 7.62X39.
Although, you can get pretty inexpensive rounds in this cal. and 99.9% of us like to go out and blast stuff into unrecognisable mush.

That would have been great 5 years ago when 7.62x39 was $80/1000 rounds.

It's still viable today when you compare the cost of 7.62x39 to the cost of .223, .308, and other calibers. Heck, glancing at current ammo prices, 7.62x39 appears to be the cheapest centerfire rifle cartridge you can shoot through a factory AR, except for the 5.45x39 cartridge.

I've been shooting both those ComBloc calibers through an AR for some time now. It's fun and cheap, and the 7.62x39 round through a 20" AR upper can be accurate out to 300 yards :)

I'll be following the Bushmaster developments, especially regarding the reliability of those 26-round mags. Thanks for the heads-up, QD!

I wonder if they're truly making their mags in-house or having one of the other companies manufacture them.

C-Products is supposed to be the current best 7.62x39 mag aren't they (and they're far from perfect)?

I'm using C-Products mags now. Their straight mags for 5.45x39 and 7.62x39 work just fine for me, but the curved mags are somewhat buggy. Bushmaster says their mags are 26 rounds, so hopefully they have a new design and didn't just plug a C-Products mag...
