View attachment 130830 thing looks and sounds like a .357 Max out of a Handi rifle

eta: I just bought a 180gr Gas Checked mold from lee for a 357 Max round. But it might be interesting to see what new bullets are developed for this version of new.

Here is a little more data about the .357 Maximum.

History of the .357 Remington Maximum
In 1983, the .357 Remington Maximum was released as a joint project between Ruger and Remington. Remington manufactured this impressive cartridge, and still produces new brass for handloaders on occasion. Ruger developed a Blackhawk specifically for the cartridge, but word of barrel erosion and "flame cutting" came to light quickly and production of the revolver was ceased with only about 400 produced. Since that time, many believe that the issues stem from using light-loads consisting of 110 and 125 grain (gr.) bullets that allow for velocities Ruger never intended. The revolvers that were built in this caliber are rare, and consistently go for a premium over other Ruger Blackhawks.

Despite the fact there is little commercial production for the .357 Remington maximum, the cartridge is well liked by hunters who understand the velocities, energy, and recoil it produces makes for a very efficient and manageable cartridge. The .357 Rem. Max. has the energy and accuracy needed for 200 meter silhouette shooting. Because of this, many hunters are realizing the potential of the cartridge for hunting medium to large game.

You can find handguns in the .357 Remington Maximum, but prices vary. The most common include:

  • Ruger Blackhawk
  • Dan Wesson Model 40
  • Thompson Center Contender
There are other firearms chambered in the maximum, but their availability is limited and prices can be high. One example would be the Savage Model 24 combination rifle/shotgun. There were some factory chambered in .357 Remington Maximum over 20 guage.

Where they bust the sod in South Tulsa County.
I know Indiana requires minimum 35 caliber for deer...
"Rifles chambered for cartridges that fire a bullet of .357-inch diameter or larger, have a minimum case length of 1.16 inches, and have a maximum case length of 1.8 inches are legal to use only during the deer firearms, youth, reduction zones from Nov. 17-Jan. 31 (in zones where local ordinances allow the use of a firearm), and special antlerless seasons. These rifle cartridges can be used on public and private land."

"Some cartridges legal for deer hunting include the .357 Magnum, .38-.40 Winchester, .41 Magnum, .41 Special, .44 Magnum, .44 Special, .44-.40 Winchester, .45 Colt, .454 Casull, .458 SOCOM, .475 Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .50 Action Express, .500 S&W, .460 Smith & Wesson, .450 Bushmaster, and .50 Beowulf. Full metal jacketed bullets are illegal."

I E mailed Winchester and asked what barrel length and twist was used to get the advertised velocity with that 350 Legend.

I see in this good write up the 357 Max in 24" barrel gets 2500 fps.
https://dandtcustomgunworks.websitetoolbox.com/post/357-max-test-5264779

The Legend advertised 2325 FPS with 150gr and a BC of .223.
For a drop at 200 yards of 7.6" and drift 8.2 @ 200 yards this is with 100 yard zero.

The same winchester information on their 30-30 XP ammo 150gr with velocity of 2390 and a BC of .215 has the same drift at 200 yards and less drop with 7.1" drop vs 7.6.
Is it better than the 30-30. Not enough for me to want one.

But I do not know the barrel length yet either.

Good info.

The appeal in OK and other “free” states is going to minimal unless they can get it to run in the AR platform.

As mentioned by other posters, the big criteria is “straight wall” for the states that require it (.30-30 does not qualify). Also important is the bullet diameter meets legal requirements for some states or locations (.30-30 does not qualify), and the case length is short enough (.30-30 does not qualify).

Yep in an AR here is what Winchester replied back to me ..That was fast.

Took less than 30 minutes to get the reply back from them.

Question: I see you have a new player in the field the 350 Legend. I would like to know what barrel length and twist rate was used to get the velocity you advertised. Thanks Jeff.

Answer:

Hey Jeff,

We used several test barrel legnths as this cartrdige was desinged with bolt action rifles and the AR-15 platform in mind. The 150 Grain Deer Season XP (X350DS) through a 20 inch test barrel has a velcoity of 2325 FPS. The velocity through a 16 inch AR barrel is 2225 FPS. Both firearms utilzed a 1:16 twist rate.

Best Regards,

Technical Services Dept.

Notice I did not correct their spellings :)

Cool! Thanks for posting that here!

I - and many others - have made the assumption that it was intended for use in the AR-15 platform based on parent brass and case length, but NONE of the press releases or Shot Show reports have said so specifically. At least none that I’ve read.
