I just got my old Remington 870 Wingmaster back from having the metal Cerakoted...

This is a 12 ga. 2 3/4" only gun. I got a good deal on a 30" vent rib barrel, even though the barrel itself has a 3 1/2" chamber. That's okay though, as I wanted a barrel that had a bit more weight to it, compared to the lightweight non-ribbed barrel that was on the gun...

Here are a couple of pictures of what this 50 year old gun looks like now -

Okay "turkeyrun", here are a couple of the STEEL loads I promised -

    HULL: ACTIV 12 gauge 2 3/4"

    PRIMER: CCI-209

    POWDER: HS-6 / 28.5 gr.

    WAD: Ranger-Plus / 4 petals - 1" slits

    SHOT: 1 1/8 oz. STEEL

BUFFER: Filled to top of shot

    PRESSURE: 10,700 psi.

    VELOCITY: 1,400 fps.

NOTES: This is an excellent load for shooting over decoys...

    .......................................................................................................................................

    HULL: ACTIV 12 gauge - 3"

    PRIMER: Fiocchi 616

POWDER: Blue Dot / 40.0 gr.

    WAD: Ranger-Plus + 1/8" wool felt / 3 petals 1 1/8" slit

    SHOT: STEEL 1 1/16 oz. / 14 T on top of 49 BB

BUFFER: Fill to top of shot

    PRESSURE: 10,700 psi.

    VELOCITY: 1,510 fps.

NOTES: Load this with BB, BBB or T and with the proper choke and barrel set-up, This load is good to 70 yds. and down to "0" degrees...

    .............................................................................................................................................

This is the load I am shooting now -

    HULL: Federal Gold Medal / 12 gauge / 2 3/4"

    PRIMER: Federal 209A

POWDER: Blue Dot / 34.0 gr.

WAD: CLBC / 2 petals cut full length

WAD: Add 1/8" or 1/4" wool felt, depending on shot size used

    SHOT: 7/8 oz. STEEL

    PRESSURE: 10,200 psi.

    VELOCITY: 1,630 fps.

NOTES: This wad works very well with T STEEL. Velocity was tested in 30" Hasting Wadlock barrel and is very consistent. This load is good to 60+ yds. on geese with the larger pellets and 50-60 yds. with #1 STEEL...

I have several more loads that I shoot if you need them....

I really like the grey with the black Hogue setup. Very simple looking but still unique. What color is the grey cerekote called?? And who did it?? And also on a side note your 10/22 work kills me. I think I look at that thread at least once a week. You do nice work.

Man that is a good looking 870. My dad has my old wingmaster, I need to get it from him. I like the looks of the grey/black combo, I'd like to do a black/OD.

David, thanks for the load info. That 3" ACTIV load is pretty close to what I do. Just using Fed 209 primer and 62 Ts.

You say the barrel is 3 1/2"? and it fits that old frame? I was pretty sure the new 3 1/2" barrels were a bit different to prevent interchanging, but I see in the pics, it is on the gun. I learned something today, it is a good day.

If the barrel is 3" or 3 1/2" chamber, you can safely use 3" shells in that gun. My hunting buddy has an old 870 28" mod VR 2 3/4" chamber and we rechambered to 3" 30 years ago. It is the only shotgun he owns and has never had a problem with it. My biggest concern with the T steel shot in your barrel would be the FULL choke. I have both MOD and FULL fixed choke guns and the MOD patterns the Ts much better than the FULL.

The greatest thing about those old 870s, the more you use them, the slicker that action gets.

My HD 870 is nickel plated, looks a lot like yours. Love that 'grey' finish.

good info on the gold tint tubes. funny how all my shotguns are fixed tube. Moved into the 'modern' era with son's first shotgun because we cut the barrel down to fit him, and then only have 1 tube. I plan on getting a VersaMax though and will have to get more familiar with the tubes.
