If they fall into any NFA category, then they require registration and tax. The only difference is the transfer tax on an AOW is $5 as opposed to the $200 tax for everything else.

There are certain firearms that are exempt from the nfa, pre ww2 pistols with original butt stocks come to mind. there are are many others.

How would I know if a weapon is "borderline NFA " not needing the $200 tax or the registration? I guess I mean almost NFA but not being NFA. Hope that helps to clarifying my question.

It's not really borderline, It's a nfa weapon or not, just do your research.
