So if you were going to recommend a home defense revolver in the $500-$600 price range to someone who is not a firearms enthusiast, but someone who needs and wants one to have in the home just in case, what would it be?

I'd probably say a mid-size stainless Smith or Ruger, 4" barrel, chambered in .357 or at least 38+P...something that isn't going to freak them out with recoil, and that will give them 6 (or 7) rounds at their disposal.

Not being sexist here but man or woman?

Woman; middle-aged lady with no kids at home who isn't going to want to fiddle with loading magazines, racking a slide, or too much in the way of regular maintenance in all likelihood. Something she can just keep in a drawer in case she has the need.

Ruger LCR in .327 Mag. Wide range of ammo from light recoil of .32 Short to .327 Mag. Good trigger, comfortable grip. No hammer, DAO, just point and shoot.

I have found that Hornady Critical Defense in .32 H&R seems to be manageable recoil with acceptable self defense capability.

I ask because you put something like a Ruger GP100 in her hand it's probably going to be too large where the SP101 is thinner and lighter. Like gunbuffer says a k frame will do nicely.
