Very nice sounds like you have it all planned out.
I love my .308 rifles
My first one was a Savage 10FP with a 24" barrel and accutrigger.
It shot under 1" at 100 and stayed under 2" at 200 and so on.
I reloaded for it and my friend told me many times to cut the darn barrel to 18" and my groups would tighten up and it would have a wider accuracy node.
2 years of shooting it I finally cut that barrel to 20.5" myself and crowned it myself.

Sure enough he was right.
It would stay under 2" at 300 yards.
I had a guy want to buy it that had shot it a couple times and I sold it.
That is a fat barrel rifle if you do not know.

I went down the day he gave me the money and bought another Savage but this time with an 18" barrel and threaded on the muzzle end.
Savage 10 PT-SR .308 from Academy for a bit over $500.

That rifle never fails me and holds tight groups even when the temps change outside.
First shot clean or dirty barrel is on the money and the other shots if I shoot a group are right by it.

I love the short fat barrels.
They swing easier in the woods also.
A 24" barrel sticks way out there.

One thing I like about the Savage is you can load a very long bullet over 3" will go into the magazine.
Some manufactures magazines will top out at 2.800"
Think about that when you go on your search.
