My wife took her CCW class today and was told that the parking lot exclusion only applies to public parking. The instructor stated that parking lots where students/faculty have to buy permits to park are prohibited to leave your gun in the car.

The instructor stated that it was specifically because they are not open to "any" vehicle as stated in the statute.

Anyone ever heard of that?

Sounds like they are trying to use a loophole by saying that permit required parking isn't public. That's probably good enough to get tied up in court for a couple of years

Could be. I wish I could find something definitive. There isn't a single space on campus that is 100% open to "any vehicle" without qualifier. All parking requires payment of some sort; permit payment or time meter payment.

College parking is covered by a different section of 1277.

E. No person in possession of a valid handgun license issued pursuant to the provisions of the Oklahoma
Self- Defense Act shall be authorized to carry the handgun into or upon any college, university or
technology center school property, except as provided in this subsection. For purposes of this
subsection, the following property shall not be construed as prohibited for persons having a valid
handgun license

1. Any property set aside for the use or parking of any vehicle, whether attended or unattended,
provided the handgun is carried or stored as required by law and the handgun is not removed from
the vehicle without the prior consent of the college or university president or technology center
school administrator while the vehicle is on any college, university or technology center school
property;

It says any property set aside for parking. Not public parking. As long as you leave it the car you're good.

Cant answer for OU but I know a few schools that have permit parking because its leased land to the school

Central LA Tech has a leased parking lot like that

I recently spoke with a TU Officer about this. He mentioned that if it stays in your personal car, they cannot do a thing about it. Take it out or carry it on you, they will arrest you without hesitation if discovered.
