I guess it depends on what you have dogs for. If they are only companions, it would feel very different knowing they had dispatched an intruder. Our dogs now are a mix of protection for my kids and companion. If, heaven forbid, a situation ever comes up where our kids are threatened while I am not home and they dont leave the perp DRT or off the property with minimal direct threat to the kids, I will have to find them another home or have them put down and replace them with dogs that will. Same goes for property protection, which I dont really own dogs for unless it is inside the house. If I have a tool for a specific purpose and it doesnt perform the task when needed, I have the wrong tool. Companion dogs are very different than the tool mentality and I am a huge animal person, but just like our Anatolians that kept coyotes off our spring calves there is a job to do and that job comes first. I had 3 Rotties when I was young, and was typically home alone until the sun went down from the age of 5 until adult. Both parents worked, though dad was stationed at the Fire Dept about 2 miles away for most of my childhood. We had a 12 gauge and a phone in the well house with a steel door, but the Rotties were primary protection. My parents had to get me inside to spank me or my dogs would display protective tendencies though not flat out aggressive.
