What sealed the Pinto's fate was internal memos discussing the price of recalls to make them a tiny bit safer by putting a plastic shield over the studs on the rear axle versus just settling lawsuits by people injured or killed in accidents involving the Pinto. Those memos went "viral" at the time as an example of gross indifference on the part of Ford to the fate of their customers.
