Not entirely unavailable. You could get into a plain jane full auto M11/9 SMG for a little over $3000. I know several folks who have spent that much on a couple of AR's.
I know folks who think nothing of dropping $40,000 on a new car that is worth nothing 10 years later. Instead, you could buy a good used car for $10,000, an M16 for $20,000 and keep the other $10,000. 10 years later your M16 will probably be worth far more than you paid for it. It is just a matter of priorities.
