Purchased really nice 17-4, 8.75" barrel revolver. All the markings on frame and barrel are highlighted with a gold color inlay. Why did S&W does this ? Did they ever do it before on models 17 or any other revolvers? It really stands out and I like it, just haven't seen it before.

Moreso back then than now but used to be somewhat common way to kinda spiff-up the looks back in the day. Most I've seen used gold but have seen white, red, yellow, but I don't see it used much anymore.
When done properly, I always thought it enhanced the guns appearance.
IIRC, Brownells carried a gold fill-in/inlay kit but most I knew of, used a model type paint (small bottle) and was easily removed. Hence, doesn't affect gun's value.

I think as far as value it is in the eyes of the beholder (Buyer) personally I like factory original including stocks, grips, panels whatever you want to call them. :-) I have seen gold plated trigger, hammers etc and always steer clear. Just my opinion though and you know what they say....
