S&W questions

I recently bought a S&W 64-8. I have a couple of questions that despite a lot of searching on the internet, I can't resolve.

One of my questions; is the 64-8 technically an M&P revolver? It does not have M&P stamped onto the frame, nor does it have an attachment for a lanyard.

Another question pertains to the numbers following the dash. What modifications were the 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 & 8?

I've looked and looked, but knew y'all would have the answers.

Congrats on the nice revolver! As far as I know, the 64-8 does fit the M&P designation...I'm not sure why they don't call it that anymore. I also found this online (so not sure how accurate it is)...maybe it'll help:
64 no dash 1970
64-1 1972 - intro Hvy BBl
64-2 1977 - Gas ring change
64-3 1977 - Gas ring change on 4"
64-4 1988 - New yoke retention
64-5 1988 - Hammer nose bushing and yoke retention on Heavy barrel
64-6 1998 - MIM hammer, floating firing pin, internal change
64-7 2002 - Key lock
64-8 2004 - 2 piece barrel

It's a funny thing; I received more help with my questions here, than I did on the S&W site.

Maybe they don't call it the M&P because of the new M&P line/s that are out?...not sure. I'm considering one of the new Model 66, so I've been digging through info!

I don't know. Apparently it goes back to the Model 10, which I believe used to be an M&P. I have read that the 64 came out either in 1970, 1980, or 1981. But I'm not sure when it came out. What I do know is that the K-frame came out in 1899. This is a overbuilt revolver for a .38 Special. But it's got all of the lines of a low slung fighting gun.

The 64 was a M&P for a long time...so I'm not sure why it isn't now (unless they want to use that term for the newer M&P lines).
