I hope Savage gets this gun back for investigation.
Example: Only one Savage smokeless muzzleloader has had a barrel failure, and it was by a fired employee with over 7000 rounds of wildcat loads put through it. He refused to return the gun to Savage yet continues to bad mouth savage and their gun to this day 10 years later.

Can't say much about Axis Rifles but the Mainline Savage Rifles [Model 12 Varmint and Desert Tactical 110] that I own and shoot have been great rifles and I have more confidence in them than any other rifle I own and shoot.
Since I've started reloading I run ALL ammo thru a case gauge before using it because I had a box of Federal American Eagle in 224 Valkyrie that would not chamber properly. Same Rifle with Federal Premium Ammo chambered flawlessly. That experience taught me that even the factory can screw up the sizing of the cartridge.
I read this story and can't help but think about possible operator error. How hard did he force the bolt in attempting to lock it? If the bolt does not close easily and smoothly it is time to carefully move bolt to the open position and investigate. If the cartridge was not forced into the chamber it should have been easily extracted from the chamber without force or inertia to cause firing pin movement. Too many unanswered questions here to make an accurate assessment of this story.

I use the "plunk gauge".
Using the chamber the round is going to be fired from, if it goes "plunk" when dropping it into the chamber, its good to go. If it's a no go the sound is distinctly different.
A wise old sage with some world championship pistol/rifle wins in his wheelhouse that is a member of this forum taught me that technique.

Pistols, I remove the barrel to use as the gauge. Rifles, drop one through the ejection port to hear the "plunk". They should fall right out with the barrel raised.

Hope its not an issue, just got my son a compact .243 for christmas

Unless you have a factory Head space issue any ammo that fits properly in these gauges will chamber properly in the rifle. They are about $20.00 each.No bolt locking or extraction issues with the ammo.

Lock-N-Load® Cartridge Gauge
Hornady Lock-N-Load® Cartridge Gauges allow the user to check their cases and ammo to ensure a correct fit in SAAMI chambers. Available in a variety of calibers.
