If my memory is correct, I would take a state highway west from Houma and cross the Huey P. to take I-10 into NO.

Nope. I'll need to look it up. It was west of the NO airport and took you over the Mississippi. I believe the bridge was built around 1930. Somewhere around Westwego.
I was thinking about the O.K. Allen bridge in Alexandria/Pineville across the Red River...narrow and see through grating too until they demo'd in a few years back and replaced with a new one

No, they got rid of it several years ago. I was sad to see it go. They used to give you a coupon for a free Coke when you paid the toll. I used to wonder how travelers felt traveling south on the Delmarva Peninsula from Jersey and N.Y. The price of the toll was $12.00 one-way.
They probably thought it was a cheap price to pay for freedom...
