I stand by my statement that mainstream Democratic politicians and the average registered Democrat has moved to the right when compared to the majority of the 20th century. I base this on American history, and my own personal observations. FDR was demonstrably more liberal and progressive than Obama. LBJ was clearly more liberal than Obama (Great Society). JFK was more liberal than Obama (New Frontier). The Democratic party had consisted of social liberals (i.e., believe social justice should be a component of government) and progressives since the New Deal era or earlier. Clearly from the 1930's to the 1960's the Democratic party and its politicians championed social-justice related causes. Then you have the New Left , which again was waaay more liberal than the average democrat today. Obama is not liberal at all compared to the 20th century version of his party. Half my family consists of dirt-farming Okie Democrats, and my grandmother who is about to turn 85 is more liberal when it comes to social justice issues than most anyone you'd find today. I really don't see how anyone with so much as a cursory knowledge of 20th-centuy American politics can say "the democrats have been taken over by socialists/far lefties/what the hell ever". No, that's simply the values that party has represented for most all of modern history. What the fawk do you think the New Deal, the New Frontier and the Great Society were? Only today they don't push it nearly as hard because the populace has been polarized and has forced them to walk a tightrope. And Republicans, well I can't even say they've moved to the right. They've pretty much just become bitter, regressive assholes with no plans and no ideas whose only purpose in life is to yell about, and try to counter things the Democrats do. It's pretty clear the Republican party was further to the left in the 1950's than it is today. Read the 1956 Republican Party Platform. Sounds a lot like the Democratic party of today. I'm telling you, some people live in a fantasy world when it comes to this stuff. It's pure revisionist history, or it's pure ignorance.
