Im looking at an Amcrest system and it says that it doesn't come with a HDD but does have USB backup so does that mean it will store all the motion detection video on the USB? I looked at some awhile back and they had HDD but it looks they have changed since then.

Must not be very good resolution if its stored on a USB (take you mean thumbdrive) HD video is a lot of GBs. You could get a external HD for back up

I think it means you buy your own HDD (pick your size and flavor) and install it.
The USB is just an alternate way of downloading the files.

Im getting even more confused the more I read about NVR vs DVR. Ugh. I need to talk to a specialist. Anyone know any good forums for home security?

Many do not come with the HDD, you add the size you want and just click format, mine can run up to a 6TB HDD. Be sure to get one for CCTV use, they run 24/7. The bigger the drive, the longer your recordings will be stored before being over written. I have a 500GB on one 4 camera system and with HD recording with motion events I get 16 days storage.

On mine they cant use the USB unless it has a HDD, you have to go into the memory to make the back up.

I can lower my picture quality down to VGA and get about 6 months of recording, on the 500GB, but the picture sucks.

That being said, if you find a way to keep spiders off the camera lens, patent the idea and you will be rich big time. :)

Anybody tried the Wink wireless systems?
They show the resolution on TV to be really clear, but I don't trust advertisements.
I like the feature that shows motion and sends me an email so I can deal with the intrusion in real time vs getting home from vacation to a stripped house and some five day old theft.

I have Ring in addition to my POE system. The ring is really handy. The motion alerts are great. My home automation system also has alerts that can send me text message notifications and/or emails.

NVR is a Network Video Recorder. This is a type of DVR that can record IP cameras that are up and running on the same network. A DVR is just a video recorder with BNC or some proprietary connections. The benefit of the NVR is that each of the cameras just plugs into your network and so does the NVR. In a DVR situation every camera has to make a home run back to the DVR. If you get 8 1080p cameras running on a network it better be a pretty robust network. For most DIY folks a DVR is a cheaper and simpler setup if you can get it all wired.

I tried them and was not impressed. I bought five sets of three outdoor cameras and a hub. I ended up with two of the five hubs not working and at least one of the cameras not working. I gave up and returned them before I even got all the cameras tested. The ones that did get working were not as much motion video cameras as they were cameras that took a whole bunch of still pictures. It seemed like may be one frame per second or less.

Im guessing that it isn't possible to have wired system and be able to view from a cell phone correct? I really don't want to add more wireless to my router but would like the ability to view it in real time.
