and there's some irony in complaining about nobody being around you.

No one said they had no one, just dont want to bother them. Some old folks have outlived everyone they knew though so it happens.It's a large favor to ask of a friend to go pick up a large grocery order and really bad if they have to spend time at Wal Mart doing it.
I did ask friends for simple stops, Budweiser n Copenhagen and I always overpaid them or bought them lunch if I asked em to pick me up a Whataburger.
