This is a C&P of a post I made on the Kansas forum today. The background was concerning the elderly and the disabled carrying for protection. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

I put about sixty 38 special rounds downrange today and I can assure the board that the mean pizza box will never do any harm again. The gun was my S&W 686 in a 40+ year-old Roy Baker Pancake holster under my 'shoot-me-first' vest. For the most part the ammo was WWB stuff from WallyWorld. The sole exception was six GDHP that I needed to get shot. In other words, the stuff I carried for the past three or four months. The weather was excellent.

I took my cane to better simulate life and when I needed to shoot, I let it go. This showed a problem. The cane is a stand-up type, but I habitually carry it in my right hand, and that is the side my gun is on, so I should strongly consider walking with the cane in my left hand. This won't make any difference to my balance; it is simply a matter of getting used to it and making a few adjustments on the cane. Plus, left-hand carry might be better for my arthritis on my left side.

I taped a seal from a plastic coffee can on the pizza box (roughly 8" in diameter., and used that as an aiming point. Drawing, even from concealment, presented no issues, and I was able to get most of my shots in the seal, with the few that did not hit the seal still hitting the box, and were ones that I shot while moving. I didn't go backwards but moved mostly diagonally (to my ten o'clock and two'clock) and side-stepped to minimize the risk of falling. My shooting was decent, with no real problems noted.

I used the revolver's sights for maybe twelve of the sixty rounds, the rest being point shooting. The range is somewhat uneven and neither this nor my balance presented any real problems this time around.

The primary issue that I noticed today was the one with the cane and that is simply a matter of switching sides and getting used to the switch.

Hope this was helpful to some of you.

Practice is what determines how one reacts to a situation that brings the stress level to the top.
You get to experience Fail to load, Fail to eject, and other scenarios that make one a better defensive shooter. If you react to the failures as part of your training, it will make you a better shooter overall, and might help you when the SHTF.

Quite so, Mr H., however my 686 has proven itself to me many times over. It is one of the guns I was authorized to carry when I was a PI in Kansas.

As an aside and also somewhat to my surprise, this topic has generated a fair amount if discussion on the Kansas forum. The primary idea I took from these men was to use the cane as a distraction, and not as a striking or jabbing weapon.

    My first thought exactly.
That cane can cause a serious distraction as it is spinning towards a potential assailant's face, giving you a bit more time to draw that hog leg. I don't have a cane, but I always have my key chain or something in my hand if I have to walk through a suspicious area...like a dark shopping center/mall parking lot/gas station/convenience store, especially at night. I'm a relatively "senior citizen" myself, and walk with a pronounced limp, perhaps appearing to be a soft target to a would-be mugger. You, walking with a cane, may appear the same. Little does the prospective bad guy know that you are an Ace Shootist and an OSA member in good standing! Fling that cane at the thug's mug and give your self that added bit of time to take control of the situation.

Oh, my goodness gracious!! If you dared say that on the Kansas forum you would be Corrected very quickly. Please note the capital 'C'. According to this guy (I have mentioned him a time or two on here) if you don't do things his way, you are WRONG!! I am, according to him, just waiting to get myself killed due among other things, to my carrying (are you ready) a revolver.

He is a 'hard act to follow' according to one instructor he refuses to name and there are videos on the web that he refuses to link to of shooting schools using him for their advertising.

He has watched 50,000 shooters on the range and they all do better with what he calls the Modern Striker-Fired (MSF) pistols. No disagreement on this point is allowed because he only deals in facts and the fact is that MSF is the best pistol there is for everyone. Science and physics prove it.

I could go on but this suffices to give a picture of him. I'd put him on ignore, but he is too entertaining.

Only if you're efficient, contextual, evolved, scientific, and not in denial.

As one wag* put it on the kansas forum:

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the MSF, make straight in the desert a highway for our Glock.

Every MSF shall be exalted, and every revolver and 1911 shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:

And the glory of the MSF shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of ** hath spoken it.

    Or consider this one.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the revolver, nor standeth in the way of the 1911, nor sitteth in the seat of the 45ACP.

But his delight is the way of the MSF and in this doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth his fruit in his season; his leaf shall not wither and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The shooters of the revolver are not so: but are like the chaff that the wind driveth away.

Therefore, those who shooteth the revolver shall not stand in the judgment, nor those that favoreth the 1911 in the congregation of the MSF.

For the Good knoweth of the MSF, but all that shooteth the revolver shall perish.

    Or this. (shudder)

A Commandment to the Faithful from the holy Ayatollah himself (peace be upon him):

All who deny and would write or speak against the One True Way and the Holy Prophet of the MSF, (peace be upon him) their followers, fellow scoffers and all who shoot the 1911, the 45 ACP and the revolver are condemned to perpetual darkness and all faithful followers are called to a holy struggle against all who deny and would blaspheme against the One True Way and his Holy Messenger.

And when this is done, henceforth no one will dare insult or scoff at the sacred beliefs of the followers of the MSF, the One True Way nor its' Holy Messenger. (peace be upon him)

In the Name of the MSF, the One True Way.
