My considerably well-researched reading/study shows me that The P228 had a folded carbon steel slide and the P229 blackened stainless slide is forged to allow for the more powerful .40 and .357. The M11-A1 arose from the original M11, which was basically a 9mm P228. The M11- A1 is now categorized as a P229, and is on Sig's website as such. But, at least initially, Sig slapped P228 grips on it to acknowledge it's history, as the P228. AFAIK, they are still putting P228 grips on the A1 which as said above is really just a P229 but with a few "improvements". Confused yet? The A1 comes stock with Sig Night Sights and the Short Reset Trigger (SRT) and a fancy UID label so it makes you think it looks purty cool; like you're kinda all official and stuff. The labels sometimes comes off with cleaning; mine is still stuck on there but a few more passes with Hoppes or something and it will probably fall off. You can get stainless ones made to glue on there if you want...I won't bother. Oh yeah, the M11-A1 also has phosphate coated (parkerized) internals. The M11-A1 is therefore basically a dressed up P229 with a fancy UID label, Sig NS, SRT, phosphated innards, and P228 grips (replaced mine with Hogue G10 because thinner). It one of many P229 variations listed in Sig's online catalog as such. And it sure is a darn good pistol.
