I've been playing with the Fresnel lenses and if I was going to be stationary, I could, with some stainless steel mirrors get enough heat from about 5 or 6 lenses to cook with. One lens just concentrates the heat in a single spot and will burn the food at that point. A windup turntable would maybe make it work, but I'm thinking the proper use for the fresnel lens is to start the cook fire. I took some bark from a lace bark elm in between some of the recent rain storms, and with the sun at the 1:00 position, I was able to get a flame from the bark in just over 3 seconds. Paper took quite a bit longer, and cotton balls with vasoline ignited in about 3 seconds also. The brick rocket stove shows more promise for outdoor cooking than anything else I've seen lately. Not something you want to pack out though. The good old dutch oven is still the go to item of cookware for primitive cooking for me. As long as I have propane and a truck to transport all the camp junk, I rough it with a camp king oven and a giant coleman propane camp stove. It is the one with the extremely high output burners. Between those appliances, I can cook like at home except for the microwave.
