So, I came into possession of a sporterized Carl Gustav Stads Chileno Mauser. Can’t find a caliber designation on this thing anywhere. Everything is nice and the action is smooth, but the problem is I am a lefty and it is obviously a right handed bolt. Any opinion on caliber or value for this thing? It appears most on-line listings show caliber as 7x57, but without markings I hate to just start throwing ammo in there to see if it chambers.

It sounds like a Swedish Mauser, originally chambered in 6.5x55. Carl Gustavs never made Chilean mausers. Those were made by Steyr or Ludwig loewe, or a couple other companies. It's value depends on how nice the sporterization was done, or whether bubba did it. Post some pictures!

I stand corrected. I was doing it off of memory and that is never a good thing to trust. I conflated 2 rifles that I picked up at same time. You are right. The Chileno is a Chileno Modelo 1895 and is from Loewe in Berlin (pics). Still can’t find a caliber marking though.

By the way the Carl Gustav Stads was a 6.5 Swedish that I traded off already.

Information I've seen points to it being 7x57. Looks like the original barrel too. Safest thing would be to do a chamber cast like Retired1 mentioned. Looks like a very nice rifle.
