600 wet and dry sand paper will get most all scratches out depending on how "polished" a finish it is. Many times Stainless is polished with 400 w/d.

What Kurt said up there^. Maybe start with a few passes on 400 grit

Springfield slides are not usually very flat, if you want to just make it look nice then masking off the rounds and hitting it w a wire wheel is the quickest easier way to clean up the flats as opposed to sanding. Unless you have a surface grinder or a granite plate and time.
